JUST IN TIME, JUST IN SEQUENCE
A composed festival
One might think a factory functions like an orchestra: each operational step must be just in time, just in sequence, spot on. Just in Time, just in Sequence – this is the formula of car production and factories. A car is produced in a determined sequence of operations, the time needed for each step being precisely defined. The sequence of these steps creates a sort of metascore, a chronology that is divided into individual beats and sequences, each with their
own rhythm, their own duration and own speed, which merge to an almost “symphonic“ structure. Based on this timeline, composer Ari Benjamin Meyers translates the beat and the rhythm of car construction and the uniform motion sequences of the production process into a uniquely composed festival. It will last for eight hours, as long as a typical working day, with alternating shifts of play and song. Participants are professional musicians, performers or dancers and the ensemble of Schauspielhaus Bochum, but also Opel workers and numerous other local volunteers, choirs and orchestras. Together we will orchestrate this new work and make it resound in the lobbies and corridors of the Schauspielhaus: The whole city is invited, when the theatre is transformed into a factory and the factory into music.
In the context of ExtraSchicht, Just in Time, just in Sequence will culminate in a DJ performance at the Turbinenhalle of Jahrhunderthalle Bochum and a party starting at 11 p.m. Starting from 6 p.m., the Schauspielhaus Bochum will also open its doors to Extra-Schicht visitors and allow them to look behind the curtains. Start of the tour is every half hour at the DETROIT-PROJEKT showroom, the Eve-Bar. (Included in the tickets for ExtraSchicht).
Ari Benjamin Meyers, born in New York in 1972, presently lives and works in Berlin. Though trained as a composer and conductor, he has increasingly presented his works in the context of visual art since 2007. In his latest projects and compositions the artist has been looking into structures that redefine the performative and immaterial nature of music. The scope of his works becomes apparent in his numerous collaborations with artists such as Tino Sehgal and Dominique Gonzales- Foerster. Ari Benjamin Meyers was music director of the group show Il Tempo del Postino curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Philippe Parreno (Manchester International Festival, 2007 and Art Basel, 2009). In 2009 he composed a part of the Eichbaumoper. The oneyear installation Chamber Music (Vestibule) by Ari Benjamin Meyers will be shown at the Berlinische Galerie in 2014.
Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, an adopted Montrealer who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000 for labels such as Cynosure, Intr_version, Revolver, and Scape.
Deadbeat has performed at some of the world's most respected festivals, including Barcelona's Sonar, Berlin's Transmediale, and Montreal's own Mutek. From 1999 to late 2003, Scott worked, assuming various roles, for the Montreal based company Applied Acoustics Systems, makers of the Tassman Software Synthesizer. Having now moved on to pursue his own musical efforts full time, the experience has left him with a passion for the development of new creative interfaces, and a strong grasp of some the most cutting edge technology in the industry.
Whether crafting quirky, not-quite-dancefloor techno, or rumbling digital dub,Scott continually strives to create music that honors the past beyond empty tribute or cultural appropriation, by infusing the digital tools of the present with a little of the magic known as human imperfection. Hindered only by the occasional buffer underrun or synapse misfiring, Scott continues to search for his own unique voice between the ones and zeros.
