Robert Borgmann, born 1980 in Erfurt, studied fine arts in London, philosophy and German language and literature at the University of Cologne and directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch in Berlin. He has worked as a director at the Schauspielhaus Zurich, the Centraltheater Leipzig (in the 2011/2012 season as house director), the Schauspiel Köln, the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, the Schauspielhaus Wien, the Schauspiel Stuttgart, the Berliner Ensemble and the Burgtheater in Vienna. His productions of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya (2014, Schauspiel Stuttgart) and Ewald Palmetshofer's die unverheiratete (premiere 2014, Burgtheater Vienna) were awarded invitations to the Berlin Theatertreffen. In 2019 he staged Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot at Schauspiel Frankfurt and Medea by Hans Henny Jahnn at Schauspiel Köln. In 2020 he premiered Elfriede Jelinek's Schwarzwasser at the Akademietheater Wien. In Munich, his adaptation of Heinrich von Kleist's novella Die Verlobung in St. Domingo was seen at the Cuvilliéstheater in 2018. In 2021 he staged Hamlet by William Shakespeare at the Residenztheater.
