In their new project, Matthias Brandt and Jens Thomas dedicate themselves to the work and complex personality of Robert Schumann. More than almost any other composer, Schumann combines the artistic with the biographical. His psychological instability, the recurring depressive thrusts and states of "complete nervous exhaustion", the fixed idea of going mad – all this is undoubtedly reflected in Schumann's work. Matthias Brandt and Jens Thomas, who have celebrated remarkable successes in recent years with the programmes Psycho - Fantasie über das kalte Entsetzen and Life – Raumpatrouille & Memory Boy among others, stage this phenomenon in an individually designed collage of words and improvised music. Nothing seems to be fixed or routinely rehearsed on these evenings. While Brandt makes the nerves of the audience vibrate, Thomas improvises appropriately at the piano – a fascinating play of text and sound that juggles with the mental abysses of the characters.
