Maarten van Otterdijk studied music at the Maastricht Conservatoire before going on to become a stage and set designer. Throughout his career, he has been involved in numerous productions and has worked in various roles, including set design, lighting, sound and dramaturgy. In 2001, he founded the acting collective Jonghollandia with a group of graduates from the Maastricht Theatre Academy; the group later became known as ZT Hollandia and is now known as Wunderbaum. Van Otterdijk primarily takes on tasks in the field of set and spatial design, but often contributes to conceptual processes as well. Between 2018 and 2022, van Otterdijk was part of the artistic management of the Theaterhaus Jena, which was taken over by Wunderbaum, and he contributed to both productions and the theatre’s artistic direction. The collective’s play Die Hundekot-Attacke (Jena, 2023), for which van Otterdijk was responsible for the stage design, was invited to the 2024 Berlin Theatertreffen and won the 3sat Theatre Prize.
