Studio Dietrich & Winter consists of Karl Dietrich and Joel T. Winter, who have been developing work together since 2023. They bring their different backgrounds – ranging from scenic painting and carpentry to film studies and music videos – together in a shared visual language.
Karl Dietrich trained as a scenic painter and carpenter and, after working at Volksbühne Berlin, spent two years as an assistant at Schauspielhaus Zürich. Joel T. Winter initially studied film studies while also working on music videos and in set design for advertising and retail interiors. He subsequently studied production design at Zurich University of the Arts in Silke Fischer’s class. The studio’s first joint project emerged during this period.
Their work is driven by an interest in urban phenomena, the workings of contemporary urban spaces and functional materials. They create spaces that interweave real locations with abstract elements. Graphic and typographic elements form part of their visual language. Their joint projects have been presented at Berliner Ensemble, Staatstheater Hannover, Volkstheater Rostock, Saarländisches Staatstheater, Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach, Staatstheater Kassel and Schauspielhaus Bochum, among others. They designed the production sets for Kim Gabbi’s film Wie war dein Tag?, which was nominated for the First Steps Award in 2025.
In the 2026/2027 season, Studio Dietrich & Winter design the set for Rentierbaby, directed by Albrecht Schroeder, at Schauspielhaus Bochum.
