Romy Springsguth, born in 1981 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz), is a stage and costume designer for international theatre and opera productions. She also works in contemporary dance and as a production designer for film. She studied stage design, costume design and scenography at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee under Peter Schubert and Roland Schimmelpfennig, graduating in 2006 with a diploma production at Volksbühne Berlin.
She has a longstanding collaboration with director Ulrich Rasche. Their productions include Agamemnon at the Athens Epidaurus Festival and Residenztheater Munich, Das große Heft at Staatsschauspiel Dresden, which was invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen in 2019, Leonce und Lena at Deutsches Theater Berlin, Elektra at Grand Théâtre de Genève and Die Johannespassion at Staatsoper Stuttgart.
Further collaborations include work with directors and artists such as Richard Maxwell / New York City Players, Bernhard Mikeska, Ludger Engels, Julia Lwowski and the music theatre collective Hauen & Stechen, Tina Pfurr, Roger Vontobel, Muhammed Kaltuk and Annalena Fröhlich. Springsguth also has an ongoing collaboration with Claudia Bossard. Their productions include Der Zauberberg at Münchner Volkstheater, Sturmhöhe at Schauspielhaus Bochum and Graf Öderland at Schauspielhaus Zürich, for which Springsguth designed the sets and costumes, as well as Marat/Sade at Residenztheater Munich, for which she designed the set. In the 2026/2027 season, she designs the set and costumes for Bossard’s production of A Clockwork Orange at Schauspielhaus Bochum.
Springsguth also works in various artistic collaborations within the Swiss film and theatre scene. She is a member of the dance theatre collective deRothfils, with whom she has toured internationally and created dance performances and films. She also works as a production designer for film. She was responsible for the production design of Annika Pinske’s feature film Alle reden übers Wetter, which premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlinale in 2022.
