Barbara Bürk, born in Cologne in 1965, studied directing at the Theaterakademie Ulm and initially worked as an actress. From 1995 to 1998, she was assistant director at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. She has worked with directors Frank Castorf, Christoph Marthaler, Johann Kresnik and Dimiter Gotscheff, among others. Her first production was the German premiere of Erklärt Pereira (Pereira Maintains) by Antonio Tabucchi at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg in 1998. This was followed by productions at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart, the Theater Basel, the Schauspiel Hannover and the Staatsschauspiel Dresden, among others. Her production of Lutz Hübner's Hotel Paraiso was invited to the 2005 Theatertreffen. In 2009, her production of Hübner's Geisterfahrer was shown at the Mülheim Theater Festival. At the Junges Schauspielhaus Hamburg, she staged her own adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, which was awarded the Theaterpreis DER FAUST in 2012. In the 2015/2016 season, she directed Effi Briest - allerdings mit anderem Text und auch anderer Melodie (Effi Briest - albeit with different text and melody) with Clemens Sienknecht at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, which was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2016. Barbara Bürk and Clemens Sienknecht continued their ‘radio show series’ with Anna Karenina, Die Nibelungen and, in Bochum, Die Hermannsschlacht. Albeit all with different texts and melody.
