Roman Kanonik was born in Kulunda/Siberia in 1982 and moved to Lower Saxony with his family in 1993. In 2003 he began his acting studies at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), which he completed with distinction in 2007. After his first job at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, where he played the role of Thisbe in Jürgen Gosch's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, his first permanent engagement took him to the Berliner Ensemble in November 2007, where he worked with directors such as Thomas Langhoff, Peter Stein, Manfred Karge, Katharina Thalbach, Claus Peymann and Enrico Lübbe and appeared in plays such as Der zerbrochne Krug, Nachtasyl, Dantons Tod, Romeo und Julia, König Richard III, Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald and others. among others. From 2012 Roman Kanonik worked as a freelance actor for various film and television productions, but also at various theatres, including Berliner Ensemble, Vereinigte Bühnen Bozen, Monbijou-Theater Berlin (formerly Hexenkessel). Roman Kanonik has been a permanent ensemble member at Schauspiel Leipzig since the 2016/17 season.
