Janine Brogt, born in 1947, trained as an actress before studying English Literature and Theatre Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Since 1977 she has worked in theatre in The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, both as a dramaturge for theatre, opera and dance, and as a writer, translator, adaptor, artistic manager and lecturer. As a dramaturge she has collaborated with directors Ivo van Hove, Pierre Audi and Gerardjan Rijnders. She was housedramaturge for Kampnagel Internationale Kulturfabrik and Toneelgroep Amsterdam, of which she was a founding member.

From 2001 she has worked as an independent dramaturge. She has also woked on translations and adaptations for theatre including works by Aeschylos, Shakespeare, Büchner, Goethe, Kleist, Racine, Pinter, Miller or O'Neill and has written libretti for opera and music-theatre productions as well as for dance. For twenty years Janine Brogt was an artistic consultant and lecturer for the Director's School of AHK (Amsterdam College of the Arts). She has also been a guest lecturer at the University of Utrecht, focusing on multimedia dramaturgy. At Schauspielhaus Bochum she is the dramaturge of Liliane Brakemas staging of Leonce und Lena in the 2018/19 season.
