Steven Sloane, born in Los Angeles in 1958, studied viola, musicology and conducting at the University of California, Los Angeles. After moving to Israel, he served as choir and orchestra director of the Israel Conservatory of Music and the Tel Aviv Philharmonic Choir, and as music director of the Tel Aviv Music Festival. Since 1994 Sloane has been General Music Director of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra. Orchestras conducted by Sloane have received several awards for their programming. At the beginning of 2008 Steven Sloane was appointed to the Board of Directors of RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture for the thematic area "City of the Arts". In 2013 he succeeded Lutz Köhler as Professor of Conducting and Director of the Symphony Orchestra at the Berlin University of the Arts. He will be the new Music Director of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra from the 2020/21 season and Music Director Designate from October 2019, succeeding Frédéric Chaslin. In the 2019/20 season he will be musical director of the co-production between the Schauspielhaus Bochum and the Bochumer Symphoniker Ein Fest für Mackie on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the two institutions.
