Jan Steigert, born 1968 in Karlsruhe, studied theatre, film and television studies in Bochum from 1992 to 1996. From 1992 he was an intern for stage design at Schauspielhaus Bochum, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the Staatstheater Karlsruhe. From 1997 he assisted the stage designer Stefan Meyer at Schauspielhaus Bochum under artistic directorship of Leander Haußmann. During this time he worked for directors such as Jürgen Kruse, Christof Nel, Dimiter Gotscheff and Peter Stein. Together with Peter Stein he created works for the Salzburg Festspiele and the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff as well as for the Expo Hannover. Since 2000 he has been working as a freelance set and costume designer for spoken and musical theatre, also gaining experience in the fields of film and television as well as architecture. Regular cooperations with the directors Torsten Krug, Martina Eitner-Acheampong and Amina Gusner have taken him, among others, to the Grillo Theater Essen, the Centraltheater Leipzig, the stages of the city of Gera / Altenburg and the Staatstheater Braunschweig. He has been collaborating with director André Bücker for many years, with joint productions at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau and the Nationaltheater Mannheim as well as the Landestheater Niederbayern in Passau, among others. In the 2020/2021 season, he is designing the stage set for Martina Eitner-Acheampong's production Drei Mal Leben.
