Norbert Lammert was born in Bochum in 1948. He is the oldest of seven siblings; his father was a bakerman and his mother a housewife. Lammert studied social sciences in Bochum and Oxford and received his doctorate in 1975. He has been a member of the CDU since the mid-1960s and served for the party in the German Bundestag from 1980 to 2017. For nine years he was Parliamentary State Secretary in various ministries. He has been Deputy Chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation since 2001 and Honorary Professor of the Ruhr University Bochum since 2008. From 2005 to 2017, Lammert was President of the German Bundestag and thus held the second highest office in the state. Especially as President of the Bundestag, Lammert gained great prestige with his speeches, even across party lines. Lammert is a self-declared friend of music, theatre and literature. Since the 2018/2019 season he hosts his own series of talks, Ein Gast. Eine Stunde (One guest. One hour) at Schauspielhaus Bochum.
