Sandra Hüller, born in 1978 in Suhl, studied acting at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch in Berlin from 1996 to 2000. Her first engagements took her to the Theaterhaus Jena and the Schauspiel Leipzig. From 2002 to 2006 she was a member of the ensemble at the Theater Basel, after which she performed at the Münchner Kammerspiele, where she again belonged to the ensemble from 2012 to 2015. Guest engagements have taken her to the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, the Ruhrtriennale and the Theater Neumarkt in Zurich. She has worked with directors Johan Simons, Schorsch Kamerun, Sebastian Nübling, Tom Schneider, Lars-Ole Walburg and René Pollesch, among others. In 2003 she was voted Young Actress of the Year by the theatre journal Theater heute and four times, in 2010, 2013, 2019 and latest 2020 for her role as Penthesilea and Hamlet (director: Johan Simons) Actress of the Year. For those roles she was also voted Best Actress in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2019 (critics survey of Welt am Sonntag NRW). In 2013 she received the 3sat Preis des Theatertreffens der Berliner Festspiele. In 2009 she was awarded the Ulrich-Wildgruber-Preis. Her film roles - including Requiem, Brownian Movement, Über uns das All, Finsterworld, Toni Erdmann and In den Gängen - have won her numerous awards, including the Silberner Bär at the Berlinale, the German Film Awards 2006, 2014 and 2017, the Bavarian Film Award 2006 and 2017 and the European Film Award 2016 as best leading actress. She is a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin. In 2020 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her commitment since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic to point out social grievances in the theater, in the cultural industry and with regard to all those whose professional existence is at risk. In 2023, Sandra Hüller received the European Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Anatomy of a Case. In the same year, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) also honoured her for her roles in Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest. Since the 2018/2019 season, she has performed regularly at the Schauspielhaus Bochum and is associated with the ensemble in a special way.
