On the run from some gangsters, Grace takes refuge in the small village of Dogville. The people there take her in and in exchange she helps them in their everyday tasks. Everyone loves this young woman and a time of harmony begins. But the police keep appearing in the village with a wanted notice for Grace. Distrust grows of the stranger in their midst. Who is she really? Can she be trusted? The villagers’ behaviour changes and the helpless Grace is at their mercy. What was once a place of refuge becomes a place she tries to escape from. However, the dynamic between those in need of help and those willing to provide it, between the powerful and the powerless, is unexpectedly turned on its head once again.

With this production of Dogville, Schauspielhaus Bochum continues its long-term collaboration with the Folkwang University of the Arts. As part of the new Theaterrevier project, a production will be created during the 2020/2021 season with 4th year acting students. It will be directed by Karin Drechsel, who not only has a wealth of directing experience – she has been directing since 1991 in cities such as Hanover, Ulm and Frankfurt –, but has also taught acting for many years at the HfMDK in Frankfurt, the Mozarteum in Salzburg and also the Folkwang University of the Arts.
