Text
Two classics, one collision
Do Ibsen’s works still stand up to the demands of the 21st century? Or do they require fundamental retrofitting of seatbelts to pass the MOT – has the A-pillar perhaps already rusted through? Two Ibsen plays are put through their paces here: In Nora oder Ein Puppenheim, a woman begins to radically question her role as wife and mother, caught between self-improvement, care work and economic dependence – thereby shaking not only her relationship but an entire social structure to its foundations. In Ein Volksfeind, a doctor discovers a danger threatening the entire city – and is himself declared a threat because he voices what no one wants to hear. Hold on tight to your Reclam booklet and get ready for a concentrated dose of decanonised classics!
In her work, director Sarah Moeremans combines analytical sharpness with a healthy dose of fun and a keen sense of rhythm and ensemble work. Light-footed and anarchic, she takes on the great classics, tests them out, puts her foot down and lets them crash.
